Husky
For starters, I nominate, LaPala, Tigger, Vytautas, FatFingers, Black Jack, Tigger, Etch, Legendary Lures and The fellow From GB with the Polynesian Monicker (Help with his name would be appreciated). These guys make lures I'd be afraid to get wet, due to their high quality of workmanship and detail! I must have missed others, sorry. Who else did I miss?? Add to the list and I'll ask Jerry to make it Sticky!
LaPala
Thank You Husky for the high regards but I'll have to decline. I do not think it is appropriate to put anyone on the "high council". We have a lot of great makers here and some are not even on the net Yes it's a great feeling when u get to know people think highly of your work; it makes all the attention to details and quality worth it. But the world is full of talented people and some we may have not discovered yet due to language barrier and other reasons. Some who maybe in your view do not belong in "high council"; but lure making is a craft that encompasses a lot of medium and no one can be the master of all. Thru contributions from all, we can all gain and take the little steps in knowledge, techniques and towards a better mouse trap so to say. Everyone is equal here in that we all share the passion for lures and are willing to push ourselves to the next level. I think that is more than enough. fatfingers
I used to be a marathon runner. One thing I learned was that no matter how good you get, no matter how strong and fast you get, there will always be someone who comes along and humbles you. In a way that is hard to explain, that is a good thing. I see baits on this board that are not particularly innovative or remarkable, but still stylish and beautiful and you can "see" the person who made them. Nevermind that you left yourself off that list, Husky!...who contributes more than you in the way of innovation and using materials in ways that no one has ever thought of? Which tree in the forest is the tallest, the strongest, the best? At the end of the day, lure-building is a window into the heart of the person working with a chunk of wood and some paint. But no matter who you are or what you do, someone will eventually come along and take it all up a notch or two (and make your jaw drop in amazement) and for me at least, that's half the fun. The other half is sharing the fun and methods with others.

Yeah, I'll get you jump started and get you running, but some of you guys, here are building "Ferrari's" while I'm happy getting that 94 Mini Van to keep running. BTW, one guy I ashamedly didn't put on the list was Jerry. After all, he built this board. Oh, and Jed, who has mastered the Glider, no simple task. rjbass
LaPala and Fatfingers hit it right on the head.....I know I have gained knowledge or ideas from just about everybody who posts at one time or another and I have been building baits for years. That's what this is all about....I don't think we want to put people on pedistals, but that is only my opinion. Rod

I figured most artistic organizations make some sort of recognition (Oscars, Tony's, All Star etc) to those who have excelled, far beyond the norm. PLUS, it'll give all the new members a list of folks to PM!
Jason
I have to say i'm dissapointed that a list has come out. I know it is just your opinion of who has the most talent, but there are people on this board, including myself, who try their hardest to improve with each and every lure. Our skills may not show with one picture on TU, but our personal accomplishments overtime have greatly improved. Knowing i am now on the lower tier, doesn't make me want to post up pics of my "1990 Buick Century" anymore then before. I say I am dissapointed because I know your intention was only to point out greatness among the carvers, but TU is about every carver and every skill level. I've always admired others work, but never felt like it was above my own. I will continue to carve and improve, but I will never put myself above another. Don't think I'm trying to flame you, this is just my personal opinion. I still respect you as a carver. Good day.

RiverMan
The strength of TU and the world wide web in general is that it allows a whole bunch of minds to come together on one task. The rate at which everyone (not just lure builders) is learning as a result of the internet is just amazing. Think where mankind might be if we had the internet 100 years ago! We have folks on this board sharing their ideas from all over the world! This was largely impossible just 15 yrs ago. I think it's also important to recognize lure action. Yes lures with amazing paint, eyes, gills, fins, etc., look pretty and catch fisherman but how many of them swim well? I will take a basic two color plug with the paint coming off it with good action over the most awesome looking plug with gills and fins that won't run any day of the week! Lets face it, most of the pretty stripes, spots, etc., that we paint are for fisherman, not fish. A needed addition to this forum in my opinion is a compilation of pool demos that each of us could access. Each of us finds joy in creating lures in a different way. Some enjoy working with wood, other with molds and plastics. Some want to make the lure look as real as possible while others just want something that will function well and details in the paint are not important. The veterans on the board are helpful for sure but some of the most valuable ideas often spring from "new minds". jed v.
fatfingers
Jed, you've been one my heroes since I started this lunacy. I lub you man and I lub yer baits, but not in a gay way.
jawjacker
riverman is right there are two kinds of crankbaits one that is designed to catch fishermen and one that catches fish the builders that concentrate on design and function usally come out on top i have learned this over the past 17 years of building thru trial and error and when you pay attention to specific details it will make you a better builder whether u have learned it the way i did or someone has told you how to it doesnt matter as long as you have fun doing that if you think someone elses crankbaits or ideas are better than someone elses thats your opionion and remember opionions are like :censored:holes everyone has one but no one wants to hear from it so just keep building and having fun while doing that isnt that what this sight is for? Tigger
How did I get in the middle of this???????? Husky I am flattered that you would mention me at all! There are times that I just log on and look through ALL the wonderful baits that everybody makes. I am just blown away. So many different styles and paths to go get to the final result. A fello cabinetmaker told once, "there are many ways to get to the finished look, who is to say what is right and what is wrong?". With the web and meeting someone like Fatfingers in person you can accelerate the learning curve. I feel a bit quilty after some responses of older luremakers that had to learn thru what little info they got from other lure builders along the way Preweb. They have earned it. Only time will heel that. Who knows? Everyone has their own style. I don't think I could do other peoples personal styles as well they can do it. Thats what makes everyones unique in there own way. The test tank would be great! Just tell me where to show up! My John
skeeter jones
Hey I'm new, What I think Husky was tyring to do is sort of give us a list of the guys who have been building for some time and have gained some indepth wisdom on the do's and dont's for lure building. I am looking for the guys who are willing to mentor me and answer my questions. Some of the guys Husky mentioned have replied to my questions. It's nice to know who has been doing it for a while. I am painting plastic lures to catch fish. I had a guy tell me that my recent baby bass lure looked better than my splatter backs. The splatter back is a proven color for me, it's ugly. What is important is that the finish be durable and even. I would like to see a list of the guys who have been here on this site for a long time and who in the opinion of fellow builders have produced some nice lures or who have helped answer and contributed to this site and it's members growth and development. I have learned too that the new guy may have a new idea as well, if I discover a product that works and am willing to share the idea we all become better builders. I have searched R.C. sites for paint answers and am testing some techniques. If someone has been helping you and giving you some help new or old the high council list is a place for you to give recognition to that person. Some may not be able to paint that well, but they can tell you how to paint or all of the chemical compounds of the paint.

Husky
Ok. Gotcha.Does this council pertain to all to TU or just to the hardbait guys? www.novalures.com JM:twocents:, but each forum should have their own GOTO guys. I.E. the Soft bait group could have a specialist who could show how to get perfect 2 tone pourings. And it's not just for the basics, but more for the "what do I do now?" specific, technical questions. It was probably a bad Idea based upon the response, as I appear to have either presented it wrong or it was inherently flawed.
