texasbass1
I was wondering why there is such an interest in trying to exactly duplicate other manufacturers colors? I have found at least in my baits and fishing that colors I mix and experiment with catch fish just as good as the colors the big boys make, an example my watermelon mix is Emerald green with a touch of black as opposed to many watermelon colors that are more pumpkin than green. Just wanted a few opinions, for me I like to not only pour my own baits but to find a color that is catching fish and no one else has. Thanks for the feedback. charkins
I second that. I make colors that I am sure that the bass haven't seen before as well as try to match the local food source. The bass here are coughing up a crawfish that is kinda dark brown to black. I never saw a crawfish like that before. Any ideas as to what color it might have been BEFORE the stomach acid went to work on it??
Don
I have seen crawfish so dark reddish brown they almost looked black. Reminds me of a colour I poured not long ago... I was originally going for cinnamon but soon found out it was way too dark, so I added a crapload more brown and a hint of black... I call it Double Chocolate Chip. It's alot darker than the photo makes it look.
alsworms
Cool topic. I've always been a color guy. Sometimes just adding a different color glitter will trigger more strikes. It really is a lot of fun just playing around and seeing what kind of combos you can come up with.
bassn1
A lot of the guys I sell to have had success with one of the big boys baits in a certain color. They don't take into account the baits action or the conditions of the day that made the fish bite. They are convinced it was the "color" that made the fish bite and they have to have that "color". As for me, I favor black, dark greens and browns and blue.
pete s.
the colors catch the fishermen first. silouette and action more important. best color in the world is useless if the bass rejects because it does not represent a food source. nova
The main problem is that some anglers give the fish too much credit. They want the exact color/glitter or they won't even try it. I had a customer a few years ago come in to order 2 spinnerbaits. He wanted an all black shirt with 6 strands of red along the bottom of the skirt. He flat told me that it was to be only 6 strands of red. If there were 5 or 7 he would not buy it. I tried to explain to him that bass can't count but he would have none of it. I know that this is an extreme example; but it gives you an idea of just how set in ther ways some anglers are. www.novalures.com
jmik26
that is some funny stuff Nova. Some of our customers are the same way. They want an exact color match to Zoom, Yum, GYCB, etc. Its like there confidence is shot if it doesn't match perfectly. Some of our best colors were found by mistake and don't look anything like the "industry standard". You guys are right though, if it don't catch the fishermans eyes it don't have a chance..... Delw
Tourny fishermen are the worse its all about color to most. ive seen guys taht are good sticks go to the crapper cause they forgot the baits at home or in the truck etc. Delw
texasbass1
I guess that is why I'll never start selling baits. I like to have fun with the colors. Having to find the perfect match sounds like work!
nova
Del; We've got more than a couple of guys in our tour that if you show them a big fish on the water, or they see you catch one, it just about kills them if they don't have one. And one guy will sometimes pull out and go home. I know this is further off topic but when you talked about guys having their hearts ripped out over certain baits it brought this to mind. I'll never understand folks like that. I'm usually one of the last guys off the water. My thought is that if I'm paying for this, I'm getting everything out of it I can. Heck I've won tournys in the last 20 minutes. You just never know what will work or where until it does. You can only guess; the rest is up to the fish. www.novalures.com
Lingerdog
It's funny, when I started experimenting with some baits I was making, I would get funny looks, and I'd say "if I ever start selling lures, I'll make more money off a lure that looks like it'll work, than one that works every time bit looks ugly." Delw
Nova, we have a few guys like that here too, and they are pretty good friends of mine. my favorite thing to do is fish behind them with the same bait and all I have to do is catch one and they are done for the day. we have one guy that comes up and always ask how you did, like the first 2 hours in the am, we usually say we have been culling all morning. one time just for the heck of it I caught a small keeper and said crap I caught like 30 of these already and tossed it back. they guy about died cause I didnt check it to my other fish. he was done for the day. we beat him and got a check with 3 fish( we didnt have any in the live well at that time) that forth fish would have put us 2 places higher LOL
MicroSalm
Now we are getting into the psychology of a fisherman and the superstitions. Actually that would be a good post. What do we do say, do, or use to other fishermen to get an advantage over them?
nova
Micro; I suppose it all depends on who you are talking to. There's a couple of guys here that I always tell the truth to and they are convinced that I'm lying. I have fun with that one. Then there are other guys that one tourny I'll show them a fish and the next tourny they ask all I do is smile at them. Drives them crazy the rest of the tourny. Head games can be a big part of a tourny. www.novalures.com
