What makes your baits so different?

Recommended Posts

Besides the paint job, what makes your baits different from the big company name baits?

I make Spinnerbaits, pretty much the same bait as everyone else makes, although I use mostly Wide Willows and my bead pattern on the arm is not the same as anyone elses that I have seen.

What do you do to make it your own?

I double barrell wrap my end loop on all my spinnerbaits- haven't lost a blade/swivel in about 10 years. Hand tied skirts are also a must- bands are for mass production. If I want that bait to have 1 chartruse strand as a lateral line, I can do it. 3D eyes also add a lot of appeal to a bait!

Not to sound snarky... they're different cause I make them... that's good enough for me.

I have complete control over every facet of the bait we use... I don't really care if it is identical or not to everyone elses... mine still catch more fish!

The casting of the lure, the fine detail that we all put in making each one. Each one is just a little different but just the same.To know and get the satisfaction of knowing I made this lure and I think the members of TU make better lures than the big boys do!!!!!!!!!!!

When you say duplicating baits, what do you really mean? Lot of the guys here make a Do-It Ultra-Minnow. Lot of guys paint there jig silver bottom, blue or black top. I make them and so do 100 others. Does that mean duplicating. Not to me. I never felt that if somebody used my paint process, that it was mine. We all do the same thing, with all the same colors. Now if I sold you or gave you my painted jigs, and then you sold them to someone else and said that you made them, yes I would be really :pissed: off. If your process is that important to you or that secretive, then don't share it, because other than TU members looking at this site, there are lots of others that just read the posts, and aren't willing to help. The way to avoid this is to PM people. The ones you can trust, and yes trust is a big thing with me. You burn me once, I may forgive, you burn me twice you can kiss my :censored: . Yes I do sell my jigs. I have always been willing to share, my feeling is this you get what you give.......Ted

Sim,

Do you make baits for yourself, or do you sell them to people?

I'd have no problem duplicating a bait for my own use, but I wouldn't be comfortable making a knockoff of someone elses bait or idea and selling it for a profit.

I only make baits for SimWifes and my usage - and a very few select friends, but I think you mistook my comment about 'identical' to mean that I was copying existing baits...or advocating copying.

What I meant was that many of us use the same Do-It Molds, paint with the same powder paints, if we get skirt material much of it comes from the same place, we use the same hooks the majority of the time.

The difference, for me, is in confidence and the enjoyment of putting togehter 'our' baits... our skirt combos, etc... even if the bait I am throwing is an 'exact duplicate' of a model on the market (head design, hook, wire, colors, etc...) it would still be 'better' simply because I made it instead of buying it off the shelf.

hope that clears that up.

My post wasn't meant to offend anyone. If it did I apologize. I will go out of my way to help anyone, with-in reason. As you can tell by a lot of my posts, I try to share all the information I know. I build all my stuff with what I think is the best quality. Color, painting, processes are a personal choice, that makes us all unique. We all have our own way of doing things, our own methods, our own opinions. I have dealt with many TU members, many I have helped out hopefully, and some I wouldn't deal with again. That's the way it is. I try to look at the positive side of people...................Well put Sim, when we are making jigs, and using someone elses molds along with 5000 other people, there is no real "copying or identical" in my opinion. I may like your color choice, use the same paint colors, which may end up being the hottest color on my lake. It still wouldn't be identical to yours.
