JIGNPIG
When pouring I keep getting lead around and in the eye of the hook. The mold is a poison tail mold, the mold is clean and free of any excess lead. I usually pour with the pot on number four or five. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem in the past and solved it. Thanks for any input.
mikel7@mac.com
Sounds Like Your Are Not Getting A Good Tight Clamp Around The Eye I've Never Heard Of This Problem
jigmaster
is your hook size too small? I am not familiar with pouring with that mold, but try tilting the mold so that the lead flows away from the eye area have you altered the mold at all around the eye area? reeves
Exactly! The hook is too small for the groove in the mold. Are you using the hook recommended on the mold? If so, I would get hold of Do-it and pitch a fit, they may replace it. If not, they won't help you. You could try the next size hook if it is feasible to do so. JIGNPIG
Thanks for the replies guys. I think I found the problem. Upon closer inspection of the mold I found some minute spots of lead on the finished area of the mold that surrounds the mold cavity, therefore the mold is not closing all the way, I hope. I'll let you know if that's it.
F1shohol1c
Actually, I found that the 1/2 and 3/4 oz. cavities pour great. But the 1 oz. cavity is causing some flash around the collar and lead is getting into the eye also.... what cavity was causing you problems? I'm using the exact size Mustad hook recommended. TCCustom
Something is stopping your mold from closing all the way that is why the other two are closing up but not the one further out. check all your surface area. Fedxpress
nova
I think you hit it TC. Sometimes a small piece of lead will find it's way onto the inside face of the mold and when you close the mold it flattens out; but it is still enough to not let the mold close completely. Make sure you look the inside of the mold over very well every 3 or 4 pours and clean off any foreign material before you continue pouring. www.novalures.com
Gloomisman
I've got a 3/8 cavity like that. If I use the recommended 3/0 hook lead piles over the eye. So I went with a 4/0. wanted that anyway. Works like a champ.
JIGNPIG
Yeah, I was thinking about going to a 4/0 anyway. Thanks Vince
