cavu
Is there any interest on an entry level mold making tutorial for use in the Turotials section? I have researched many of the available turorials on the web that instruct one on how to make a soft plastic bait mold, gathered the necessary materials and gave it a try. I tried to keep the process as basic and inexpensive as possible. The result is a fiberglass resin mold that produces a very good second generation reproduction of an existing bait. In this case I used the only flat sided bait I had, a shrimp bait made from a MF mold. I am satisfied enough with the results to make additional molds of this lure. If there is a need for this tutorial, please let me know and I will produce one. I am fixing to make a mold of the larger shrimp and will be glad to use this mold as an example. doughnut
I think that would be an excellent idea.
Big Splash
A quick check of the soft plastics tutorials looks like we could use one there.
doughnut
I am particularly interested in how to pull a mold off an existing soft plastic. I tried the silicon method, but the flexible bait imparts quirks into the mold.
the_hide
Im still trying to perfect this, I have some photo's and instructions I was going to add when complete. I'm making two parts of existing lures and custom made ones with the same process in plaster (actually hydrastone which is a fair deal harder than common pottery plaster). When I get it right Ill put it into the tutorials for everyone. For starters I like to let the base portion of the mold set to a reasonably firm consistency before I physically push half the original plastic into the plaster, this generally results in the master staying where you put it rather than "floating" around and forcing it in generally squeezes the plaster into the detail of the master. With curly tails etc I actually put the majority of the tail in one side of the two piece mold. I let it basically lie on top of the base, leaves a light impression only at best. The top half I do in two stages, the first "coat" is a a thinner plaster than the base I literally apply only enough plaster to just cover the master. The thin plaster allows air bubbles escape pretty well before settling and it given its consistency generally replicates most details very well because its thin enough to get into all the nooks and crannys on before settling and hardening. I usually then back this top layer with a significantly harder backing amount of plaster.
cavu
I have started the tutorial on the simple resin mold. I have the text finished and now will start the photos. This will be a very simple and inexpensive single pour, one peice mold. Should be ready in a couple of days.
SafetyChain
Has this tutorial ever been completed?
AlbyDogGone
Yeah this would be a good tutorial to add to the soft plastics section, maybe someone could post up a basic one, and then everyone can add any additional tricks and information and then one of the site admin's could post the final tutorial inder the plastics section. Just an idea. It would help I think though, to have different tutorials for making different types of molds out of different materials, especially from some of the more experienced pourers. The hard bait section is rollin, we need to catch up .. Alby

Senkosam
Would a tutorial be useful for plaster mold making?
JD
Also, there are tricks to pouring curl tail grubs and creature bait, but easy once you learn how. SenkoSam, how do you pour the curl tails and creature baits? Thanks JD
Senkosam
The most important factor of a thin curl tail, regardless of it's width, is the shallowness of the tail's cavity. Sam
