Elken
Speaking from experience, don't use the triangle mail boxes; they are not strong enough to protect a rod if the box gets caught in a conveyor somewhere. I had a 9 foot, 2-piece rod shipped to me in one of those boxes and it arrived in 4 pieces. Use heavy shipping tubes or light PVC pipe and put bubble wrap around the ends of the rod inside so that it doesn't slide back and forth. rodtrader
Corrugated PVC drain pipe. It's the stuff with small holes in it so it weighs alot less that standard solid PVC pipe. Buy some rough cut 5 or 6 foot stakes like the type to tie up plants and attach one to one interior wall with small wire to make sure the pipe doesn't bend or kink in transit. Wrap the rod in bubble wrap and the seal the ends with plastic plugs or cardboard cut outs and duct tape. Material to ship a 7 foot rod will cost 8 dollars or less at your local lowes or home depot. CrazyFish
I always use PVC pipe. I can get it in 10 foot lengths and cut it to my needs. I never, ever use cardboard tubing. I think some of these shipping companies intentionally break that stuff because it's difficult to handle.

smirkplug
Thanks Everybody, I Guess Ill Take Your Advice And Go To Lowes Or Home Depot And Buy Up To 700 Ft. P.v.c. Maybe Ill Try A Price Check From A Big Plumbing Supply Co. If I Get A Better Deal I'll Let You Guys Know ! I Think If Im Going That Route Ill Go A Step Farther And Put A Cap On 1 End Then A Screw Cap On The Other To Be Reused For Travel. One More Small Step Would Be To Put A Wire Handle In The Middle Maybe. Ive Always Hated The Expandable Accordian Type Of Rod Cases When I Fly! Any I Have To Remember If I Wanted To Keep It Simple I Wouldn't Have 200 Rods !!!!!!!!!!
BobP
It depends on how many you want to ship in one pkg, but one of the lightest and strongest pipes to use are the gray 2" central vacuum plastic pipes. The white PVC gets heavy fast! The last time I shipped via USPS, I was told there is a length + circumference total that you cannot exceed (I think it's 96"). So the smaller diameter vacuum pipe is usually necessary to mail 7' rods. Otherwise, you'll probably have to go UPS or FEDEX. As long as the shipper keeps it off conveyor belts, you're OK. If they don't, there's not much that will keep a rod unbroken. It may be worthwhile to check at a UPS package shipping store to see what they offer. I agree the triangular boxes are virtually worthless protection.
