TopWater
Ran across this site while searching for bait molds and how to construct bait molds. I have been lurking for a couple of months and thought it was high time to join up. This place is amazing!! I can predict spending countless hours here instead of working! I live in Oregon and mostly fish for bass with the occasional steelhead and salmon thown in for fun in the winter. I am mostly interested in making my own hard baits both from foam and wood, but would like to learn the soft plastic art some too. -jb
David Reid
Welcome JB. I am not into Hard Baits but like looking at them and seeing what people are producing. You certainly chose the right site and there are some very talented people here. Good luck with your quest and your hobby and if you get stuck ask or search there are plenty of people who can help and there is heaps of archived info and details. I have already learnt a lot. TopWater
Thanks for the welcome David. I have pretty much been searching since I posted and have found way more information than I can digest. Seems like lure crafting is like anything else, several ways to get the same outcome. Let's just hope I can get a good outcome:yay:
David Reid
I would suggest you specialise and concentrate on one aspect such as the Hard Baits or whatever you choose for a start off rather than jumping around all over the place. Get a little experience and knowledge there and it will stand you in good stead. I am concentrating on soft baits but absorbing from lots of other avenues and areas at the same time all of which I find interesting. If you are interested in Hard Baits and want to see what is possible have a look at this review: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewbettencourtbaitsrfbluegill.html which is made by one of the members here I believe and you will see you are in good company. I have never fished with wooden plugs like this but can appreciate all that goes into it. Good luck with your efforts.
Vodkaman
I agree with David, I have been around this site since the beginning of the year and I'll need at least another five to clear my todo list. The thought of taking on soft baits at the same time is overwhealming. Not to say it cannot be done. Welcome and good luck with it, keep us all posted. TopWater
Excellent advice guys. I have been known to bite off more than I can chew every now and again, and will try the hard baits first. My dad has a small electric lathe that I have been trying to pry from his possession for about 3 months now. My grandfather used to make his own baits with this lathe and I would love to make some with it. Again thanks for the advice and I will keep you posted. -jb
One Sock
Soft plastics are very easy to make once you have the knowledge and supplies. the initial cost for supplies can be very expensive. i would suggest not buying anything until you have posted what you think you would like to buy. Then you will at least get an educated guess at where and how to spend your money. god knows they could raise prices by 50 % and i think i would still pour baits( maybe not as many)
