pouring stations/set ups

Recommended Posts

I do my work on a 24"x48" bench-top space. My bottles of colorant and powders are lined up along the back, glitter in plastic bags hanging along the front edge of the bench off to one side. A seperate wheeled cart (with a lower shelf) to my right with the microwave, gloves, respirator and misc. items. A 20"x30" steel wire, 5 shelf unit on wheels with everything else on it, is usually somewhere behind me, or off to the side. Above the bench I tacked up sheet plastic to the joists and installed an exhaust fan (just a good strong bath fan). I bought some flexible aluminum duct, and ran that to the nearest window. In the outer space where a storm window would go, I cut a piece of foam sheathing to fit and cut a round hole in that for the duct to fit in. I like the cart and shelves on wheels because I also use this area for all my "regular" household jobs.

Pouring stations are set up for convience. I have designed mine with 4" X 4' shelves for my colorant dyes and flake containers right above my work table. My work table is 24" by 8' long and I put a formica top on it for easy clean up. I have 3 microwaves mounted on the walls. I then have a 24" X 6' cooling table where I remove the baits from molds. I have 4 shelves above the cooling table to store the baits on cookie sheets over night.

On another wall, I have a 24" X 6' packaging /shipping table where I keep all my plastic bags, and items to ship out my baits.

I keep my plastic in 1 gallon jugs under the main pouring table, which I transfer from 5 gallons containers which I fill from 55 gallon drums. I keep 1 gallon containers with premixed colors in my most popular colors under the table on a shelf. For other colors I mix as needed.

I keep my pouring pots on a high shelf ( I have a 10' ceiling in my shop ) out of the way. I keep my molds on a shelf out of the way and bring what molds I need to the pouring table as needed. My pyrex cups are also kept on a shelf just to the side of the pouring area. I have a paper towel rack near the pouring area...THIS IS A MUST! I have 4 - 4' flouresant shop lights to light up the shop. My entire shop is heated and is 10' wide by 14' long and is dedicated to just pouring baits.

Below all the tables in my shop are shelves for misc items. I also have filing cabinets that contain all my recpies, customers past orders, and other info etc. I keep my recipes on a 3X5 card and a computer disc.

You have to design your pouring station to meet your needs. What works for one.....don't always work for another.

The most important thing at your station is VENTILATION! I have a dedicated squirrel cage fan with a 12"X12" hood directly over the pouring area. It is vented outside with 8" aluminum ducting. A good bathroom exhaust fan will work also but don't skimp on a cheap one and make sure it is vented outside.

Good luck designing your own pouring area.

Thought the little guy would throw in his two cents. I do not really have a pouring station. The pouring I do is in such small quantities there is no need. I just set up in the garage. Open the door and turn on a fan behind me for ventilation (works perfectly). I have my microwave on a TV stand and my colors, glitters, molds, etc. fit perfectly on the shelves below. I set numerous cookie sheets on the floor around me and after I remove from the molds I put baits on sheets according to color. Nothing fancy but it suits me perfectly.

Now my station for wire baits is another story.

I don't have a garage yet so I used My sons old desk in the laundry/ storage room of my basement, bolted the pots to it, set up an exaust fan overtop attached it to the dryer duct work, made a shelf to put the colour, glitter, scent, etc.I keep the molds in the slideout drawer, and my resperator, gloves, glasses in the top right shelves. It's simple for now but when I invest into more supplies and get a garage someday it will probably change.

Hey onesock, whats in the tupperware tubs? is that glitter?

I was wondering if it was plastic you've already mixed and then remelt and pour later...

Willy

It's glitter, I do keep 4, 8 ounce and 1 quart bottles of pre mixed colors that i use more frequently, but never add flake until the plastic is cooked

Why it is indeed a spotty! Good eye Patrick.

I tried to snap that photo with my phone while sitting in my kayak.

When I return home with no fish my wife gets disgruntled. She dosen't value the catch-and-release as much as I. So a photo of a fish will let her know I was really fishing! HOwever I snapped that one to send to my fising buddy to torment him, as he was working.

Heh.

No, I was out of town for that event. But I love the Plastic Navy site.

Spotties are a great sportfish. I fish em with light tackle and the fight is great. They love swimbaits, thats what started me into pouring baits, is the spotties rip em up, and I hate paying for them. So now I'm tring my hand at making them.

These workshop photos are a good insight at how other guys set up their workstations. I for one have had no influences, and my setup reflects that (messy). I see that applies to most of us. There is always a good idea in every different persons approach.

Thanks for the pics all.

Willy
