rockylinx
1st question I'm ordering my products for my first pour I'm only going to pour saltwater swim baits I don't know what type of plastic to buy. I wont need a soft plastic so I cant decide between 500,502 Formula 500 Extra Strength his type of plastic is formulated to provide a tougher plastic primarily for saltwater use. It features good hook holding ability while providing good action from the lure. Formula 502 Medium Strength This is the type of plastic used by the largest manufacturers of plastic worms and other soft lures. This milky white liquid gels to a Super Soft, crystal clear plastic when heated to... Formula 536 Maximum Flexibility This formula of plastic is used predominately in the far western states and by others who demand an extremely flexible bait but with satisfactory hook holding ability. 2nd question Lumina vs Super high lite what is the difference 3rd question do I need heat stabilizer Thank You, all for your input. Without you guys I would never have gone this far.You folks inspire and continue to educate me daily Pete
Mattlures
yes you do need a soft plastic fish traps mc,s hammers are all verry soft. They get more action and more bites. They may not last as long but who cares. they dont cost verry much to makw
Willy
Hey Pete I got some plastic from another company called Janns netcraft, but I think it is lurecraft plastic but I don't know for sure... Anyway, I got the middle strength of the three and it wasn't so soft. On my swimbaits the tail had very little action in the water, unless I reeled it as fast a possible. It was tough stuff though. I took hits and landed several large calicos and a halibut before the swim tore. But the action wasn't what I wanted, especially for Mission Bay's calmer water, so I reordered from MC and got the soft stuff. I don't know what you can take from this except probibly the 'saltwater' stuff is really tough. And stiff. Like Matt said, if you're pouring, softer is better. They may not last as long but the action will be much more satisfactory. I'll gladly send you a sample of one my swims if you PM me your adress so you can guage the toughness. But I expect you'll want to order your plastic sooner than that. Good luck with your decision, Willy

bssmstr
I use Lurecraft products. The 536 is pretty soft and lively - but will tear easily. The 502 is pretty much the same as the Major manufacturers use for worms etc. You can buy hardner and/or softner to add to the plastic to get the consistensy you want. Get some heat stabilizer to add to the plastic after the first or second pour if you will reheat often or heat higher than 350 degrees (usually the first thing to burn off before the plastic burns). The "candy" thermometers take a long time to show the temp of the plastic. I bought a cheap lazer heat sensor - much faster and your plastic isn't cooling while waiting on the mercury to rise. 2 oz of plastic will make 10 centipedes and I have 1 mold with 5 cavities and usually pour 20 at a time (my wife uses the same baits I make). rockylinx
poor boy, What type (MAKER)of plastic would you recommend
SwampBaits
poor boy,What type (MAKER)of plastic would you recommend I think Poor Boy's Woman is Kim from LureCraft! I bet she recommends Lurecraft plastic.... I'd say since you don't really know what type of plastic you want, Just get a gallon of the medium plastic and a pint or 8 oz. of softener. Then you can find the right softness based on your trial and error.
Poor Boy's Woman
What a lot of guys have been doing is mixing the 500 and 502 either 50/50 or 60/40. This is easier than trying to add softener or especially hardener. Hardener is so hard to add because it is thick and has to be added when the plastic is cold. Poor Boy's Woman
......and Swampbaits - yes, I am Kim from LureCraft. I am partial to LureCraft plastic because it is what we used for 5 years before purchasing LureCraft and have tried all the others too. In the end, Pete, it is your choice of whose plastic you use. I am still here to help you in any way I can.

I don't mind using softener, but that hardener can be a pain sometimes. I think Del mentioned using a 50/50 mix of the hard plastic and medium plastic in another thread also. rockylinx
I was going to go with lurecraft because they have everything I need in one place. I looked into Del-mart but I was thrown off because there were no color samples on the plastic colors, For a beginner I need all the assurance I can get, even if its as basic as a color chart Kim how about a discount for an old friend you don't know me but im old and I have 1 friend well he's more like a dog never the less a dog friend Pete
