Javelin
I am wanting to start making my own spinnerbait heads. What kind of lead is the best to use and where can I get it? Also want to powder paint my heads. What size bowl/jar will I need to swish them through and I would like to keep the paint off the wire and hooks. cadman
Javelin, A lot of questions to answer. I would first do a word search on this site; there is a world of information here. I
Javelin
What do you use to heat up the head and can you put the flame right on the head?
cadman
I use a Wagner multi-temp heat gun. I don't recommend an open flame on any jig, I don't believe you get consistant heat temps. You don't have to get one this exotic, but I recommend at least a high and low temp heat gun for blending more than one color. JMO
counting-empties
Another source of lead is shooting ranges , most jacketed bullets use soft lead which melts and pours easily . The only down side is there is lots of waste to skim off . Most ranges have to pay to have the lead removed so they will sell to yo very cheap or give it to you . jigfisherman
I have a friend who puts walls in X-ray rooms they use 1/8 sheets of lead on the walls and I get what they don't use. I get it in sheets about 3ft long and 1ft wide then I cut it into 3x3 squares to fit in my Lee pot, its the best lead I have found.
fishnfool38
How about wheel weights from your local tire stores. they will normally give you there take offs. Also a lot of waste though.
cadman
Jigfisherman, You're absolutely right. I get some of my lead pieces from small packets they put in your mouth from dental x-rays. The hygienist even takes the lead out of the plastic seal for me. If you guys want good pure lead, lead used in x-rays is very soft and easy to pour. ragfly
I like using the lead flashing used around chimneys. You can buy it at Home Depot or Lowes. It is very soft and pretty pure. I also go around to roofing contractors and mansons and ask them to save the scrap pieces.... recycling is great!
Ogajiga
eBay has a lot of regular vendors selling lead and the better ones know to specify hard or soft. An attractive shipping option is the Priority Mail flat rate box which USPS allows 70 lbs. max for around $10, but the practical limit before the box will fall apart from stress is a lot less. I'm well supplied from a local junk yard, but if I had to I could probably buy eBay soft lead for $1.00 a lb. including S&H. If you really have no other alternative, I could send you around 8 lb. in a flat rate envelope.
Javelin
I was wandering if I could get some wheel weights and mix it with some flashing from a hardward store, say 50-50.
Ogajiga
Cadman mentioned that he uses 50-50 hard(wheel weights) mixed with soft(flashing). If thats still too hard for complete fill out in your mold you can try 75(soft)-25(hard). Last resort would be 100% soft flashing.
