Stoneroller Imitator

Recommended Posts

It is a type of sucker. In a couple of creeks I fish they are the happy meal of the local smallmouth population. They seem to like the 4-5 inch size although they will smack a larger version if opportunity arises. I don't make my own plastics but was thinking about having something made to imitate. I guess I could go with a fluke type bait....I also thought sometype of goby bait might work....I also thought some kind of 4 to 5 inch grub might be the ticket.

Looks like a sucker. A stone roller is actually a type of bullhead or cat. The walleye guys use them up here in the midwest alot. Also called stone cats and manta's they grow to about 4'' tops with the average being around 2''. Most are very dark colored in browns and dirty olive colors. Smallies pound them but I have never really poured them. I am not sure but a sculpin might be the same thing or closely related. The picture looks like a white sucker. i know some trout guys who call chubs stone fish but they have a completly different look to them.

Stonerollers I suspect are like Red eyes, rock bass, goggle eyes, shoal bass.....They are called whatever they are called based upon what ever region you are in. Stonerollers are called Horny Heads up in east tennessee where I grew up.

Nova,

The lure looks great.A very close rendition of the rock rollers here in Colorado. The Arkansas river, going thru town, was loaded with rock rollers. When I was young you could watch them move stones to make a nest.

Since the mid seventies the stocked smallmouth have almost wiped them out.Fat small mouth,no rollers.Green sunfish have taked thier place.Fat Smallmouth!!GREAT!!! No complain here.

Goby imitations would be accurate enough and honestly a tube or fat headed worm on a jig head. Several guys pour them and several are also on the market. If you want a true replication one will need to be carved then molded but that isn't too hard to do. I did a goby last year this way and to get a rough proximity to the real thing doesn't take too long. This was the master used for an RTV mold to pour plastics and a few cranks were also made.

On a side note fishermen are about the worst when it comes to knowing fish (well fly anglers I will give some credit to). Stonerollers are "minnows" they belong to the Cyprindae family in no way a catfish or bullhead(Ictaluridae). Goggle eye, rock bass, and red eyes are all unique, not the same fish. "Shoal bass" are generally regarded as an endemic species to the Apalachicola drainage.

:yay: Willie ya just had to ask if I made the master for the goby didn't ya; lol.

Got me to thinking about it and when that happens I have to stop everything and do it or it will drive me nuts and beleive me I don't have far to go; ha ha.

I did a master today out of clay and made the first master mold. Not a realistic as Travis' goby. Nice job.

Once I get the production mold made I'll post some pics.

A stone roller is a type of minnow/chub... not to be confused with the stone cat, which is a small bullhead/catfish thing.

Stone roller(Campostoma anomalum) in my fish book says dusky grey back, shading to brasy on the sides to white on the belly. Also says a pale golden stripe lower body head to tail... fins can get orage during breeding...

The picture looks like a fat minnow...

My guess a small 3" goby lure would match it good... maybe a smoke gold silver flake color...

The picture is a Central Stoneroller. I lifted it from a University of Michigan biology website. It still doesn't match exactly color wise but it is pretty close. Once I get my baits from Nova, We may tweak the color a little bit to get a closer match. There still needs to be a little silver in the sides because the real thing has them....especially when they are stressed out and loosing scales. May need to put a little fish belly white too. It needs to be pretty close because this creek I fish has EXTREMELY clear water (tap water clear) and most of the year doesn't get deeper than 6-8 ft. It is maybe 15ft across. The fish are SPOOKY of baits, sudden movements and noise. It is really more like hunting with a rod and reel. If I drop in size below 4 inches I cant beat the sunnies and redeye off it long enough for the smallies to pick it up. Besides the bigger fish like that bigger bait.

Sorry Willy,

Fish Belly white is one of my tennesseeisms. I would think it would be need to be somekind of off white although I have no idea how to do that. Hanging out on this board and reading some of y'all's posts have made me think about trying to do some of this myself.
