RTV Question

Recommended Posts

I have good amount of rtv molds from Lure Craft to go with my collection of alum. molds. The problem I am having is the finish is dull. I guess I am so use to my alum. molds with a shiny finish. What can I do with my rtv molds to get a better finish?

Example: I have a 3-1/2" and 4" swim bait mold in rtv. The bait is perfect for my minnow head and shad head jig. After the bait is poured (esp. my clear ones) they look like baits that are 10 or more years old to me. Worm oil applied to them after does not help.

Do I have to use worm oil before pouring? Is there some thing I can coat the mold with one time like resin molds?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the quick response. The swimbait molds are brand new from Lure Craft and were dull on the first pour.

I've noticed when buying several LC molds of the same item that some turn out dull while the others can be great. It's kinda hit or miss. One was so bad for me that it looked like a marble finish....brand new. I think some of it may have to do with the Silicone mixture itself, maybe having the wrong consistancy.

You can try heating up the mold if the finish is to bad. Sometimes that will make them shine better.

Basically if I want any molds from lurecraft, I pour some baits then make a Plaster of Paris mold from that. POP can have an excellent finish if done correctly.

You hit the nail on the head Swamp. It's a tough call with RTV. I have found that some of the new molds with a dull finish will get shinier with more use. When Dave owned LC, he once told me that some of the molds that are sitting on the shelf for a long time will actually lose their internal oils. All that's needed is a few pours to sorta bring the oils out.

I spray all my dipping rods, and pans with Pam.Really does a great job of keeping the pans clean,in and out.The tubes wouldn't come off the rods as easy if went unsprayed.Never had a hint of a problem, except if you use too much, and don't wipe most off,the plastic will sag on the rods.I have some old molds that I will try spraying on,wipe slightly, then pour.I always thought Pam was mostly Canola oil,and fat.water would really make a mess, that is for sure.Has anyone else had a water problem.

Some of my old pans, before, using Pam really are a mess.Pouring always made a bit of a mess and some of my pans are a mess.Any easy way of cleanig them up?

this is from a previous post I sent

"After very much use, RTV molds always start producing matt finish baits.

Look at Poor Boy baits. Their baits have that matt look. It is a signature look for them. Not all bad.

Try brushing your RTV mold with worm oil first. Also just using worm oil on the baits after you pour them works.

I puchased some Silicone Oil and brush it into my RTV mold during and after I am done pouring baits, works great."
