Is the end of soft plastics not so far away ?

Recommended Posts

I sure hope not.

I just checked out the Food Source site and it would be interesting to know what they use to make their products. And that brings about another question.......since they advertise the baits as being made of 100 percent "Fish Food", I wonder if they might not be allowed in bass tournaments? I'm not slamming the product at all (seems like a great idea).......just wondering if there might be a catch or some downsides to the process??

In my opinion, I don't think plastics will ever be replaced. They have been a mainstay in fishing for many, many years. The other plastic free products might be successful, but I'm sure we can co-exist with them.

The only question you must ask yourself is,

Do your baits catch fish and can the average angler catch fish on them when used properly!? Case closed!

If you think of all the great soft plastics that did not have any type of impregnated protein, yum, flavor, salt, etc. and that have been successful over the years, you discover that gimmicks don't last because people always come back to favorites that stand the test of time.

Senkos will be around for a long time because they work almost 100% of the time in almost 100% of the waters in the world. So do your lures, and people know it! You offer something at a good price that is of good quality, people remember. 3x plastics are a gimmick and as difficult to store as pork. Think they'll be around next year? Maybe, but the price stinks and the selection is poor and their a bitch to get off your hook.

The lowly stick has caught more bass for more anglers since Yamamoto invented it, than any other plastic. The major companies are hurt by the numbers of guys willing to spend 60 cents for a worm that beat the pants off all others, including favorites like Berkley Power baits. (No one I know even buys Power Baits anymore.) In fact many people are buying sticks from Al, Merc, Del, Big Bag Baits and the list goes on.

60 cents gets a little old when all you catch is one fish per lure!

Gimmicks are like pop music - here today, gone tomorrow!

Unless they release the technology, i dont think we have to worry about it. A couple companies cant possibly supply the demand for all anglers when it comes to plastics. Too many styles and colors that people have to have.

When and if they do release the technology, then we might have to change the way we do things, but i doubt it. Its a great idea, but I dont see anything replacing the old style of plastics. The baits we produce catch just as many fish. We all know its the presentation and action of a lure that really makes a fish strike. At least these are my hopefull thoughts.

Not to mention that most of us have a "confidence" bait that we don't dare leave home without. It's pretty hard to get a dedicated fisherman to try something new, least of all a plastic free product. I have a buddy who fishes nothing but Culprit worms. 6 years ago, he caught his biggest bass C-rigging a 7 inch Culprit and his tackle box has been full of them since. He won't even use my stuff when he can get 'em for free.

The bottom line is plastics are stable. Look at Senkos, Zoom lizards, Brush Hogs, Flukes,......the list goes on and on. All of these products have busted the market and they're not going anywhere.

The last time I heard of a magic bullet that will kill the soft bait industry seems just like yesterday when it was .......

Shal I say it??? 3-x.... snapback indistructable lures

Well I see were still all hear and standing.

Hype is just that...... Like a fad....... But funny how we just keep pushing on.

Just my thoughts.

I doubt this will have any effect on the 3 billion dollar a year industry let alone soft plastics. If they allow this in tournaments than I could go down to the store, buy some immitation crab meat and go fishing, I may have to cut it into worm looking pieces but basically its the same thing. You can already use live minnow, shiners, shad and or crawfish when recreation fishing (we will never master that with artificials). Besides, taste and sent are the last thing you have to worry about. You need to find and "LURE" the bass first. Once the bass is lured the taste/salt makes the fish hold on longer which will allow you to feel the fish before the fish feels you. Bottom line, Beleive in you and your fishing abilities and it wont matter what you use when you fish. As for us baitmakers, we need to stay away from the gimmicks and offer a nice looking "AFFORDABLE" product. That is the way to attract that 3 billion.
