Tm Customs
Ok I have carved a few smaller crankbaits and now I want to attach hook hangers. The thing is I don't like the screw eyes, being a bagey guy I am hoping to use 20ga brass wire. Now if I understand this right I will drill a small hole twist the wire into a loop and epoxy it into the hole? Is this correct? Mabey some one can explain it in detail or give me a link to a old thread, I could'nt find exactly what I am looking for. And when you epoxy the eyes and lip what type of eposy are you using devcon? Thanks for any help. Taylor

Tm Customs
Thanks Coley that is exactly what I needed, do I attach the belly hanger and the lip the same way? And should I attach the lip before or after painting? Thanks, Taylor

Coley
Corey, I sent one in today on weights with hook hangers for balsa baits. I don't know when it will be up? The one on lips will take a little while to put together. Thanks, for your interest. Coley

Coley
WOW, Corey, my wife thinks I am the Devil. What a switch. Thanks, I learned what I know from several sources, mostly from Skeeter, Hughesy, Nathan, Lincoya, and my good friend Charlie Mitchell. Practice, without fear of failure. When I made my first bait, I was one proud dude. I hooked it to my line and cast it into my Koi pond, it sank faster than a rock. It hurt me so bad, I wanted to cry. I wanted to make a balsa bait real bad, I was afraid to try. I knew I couldn't get it shaped right, so I came up with a laminated bait of balsa and cedar. With a good centerline of cedar the balsa was easy to shape. So, the reason I offer what I have learned, is to save a newcomer, the pain of becoming a bait maker. If you come up with some off the wall idea, try it, you never know the outcome until you do. I covered a bait with material once and a rattlesnake skin another time. Like Larry the cable guy says: Git R Done. Until 2 weeks ago, I had not bass fished since 1998. I caught a couple of bass on my cranks, what a thrill. And the fact someone will give me $15 for one is even better. Coley

IslandBass
Coley, Thanks for the tutorial! I placed the wiring for my balsa lures by chiseling out a small section from two halves of balsa (with a little weight biased toward the front end) and then putting the two together with 2T Epoxy. I just started to make my lures and your method of doing it did cross my mind but I wasn't sure it would hold up. Thanks for proving me wrong! It is much faster your way and it eliminates the worry of making a crooked wire form. --IslandBass
Skeeter
Don't let Coley fool you guys. He has had more ideas in the past year than I have ever had about ways to do crankbaits. The cedar balsa deal was one of the most innovative things I have ever seen or heard of. He is constantly thinking and making it happen. (I think it is that TN. moonshine). I started out as the teacher with Coley and ended up the student. Follow what he tells you and you can not go wrong. I mean that sincerely. cullin8s
I saw the cedar balsa combo in the photos, that is an epiphany. You know it has to create a different feeling to the bass' lateral line as well as a different action to the lure. Really cool stuff
Skeeter
I know what you mean. When he first brought the idea up and I saw the first pictures it did something to my lateral line also. Skeeter
Coley
You guys are too nice. Skeeter is the King of cranks and I still turn to him when I have questions. Coley
