Shipping from US to Canada

Recommended Posts

Ron,

Shipping to Canada is simple. The only thing to remember it to make sure you note everything that is in the package when filling out the customs form. If it is under 4lbs, you have a simple one page form. Over 4lbs and you have a 6 page form (1page with 5 copies). Put the contents in laymens terms. Some customs officials may not know what a crankbait is. Put fishing lure instead. I had shipped a bunch of powder paint to Germany and the purchaser had to go to customs to claim their package. They wanted to know what the white powder was. I always worry when I ship white powder paint. Hope it never breaks open!!

And if you want to keep your cutomer; don't ship UPS or any other of the same. Send it parcel post.

When UPS delivers the package they want a good chunk of change before they will hand it over. The post office only charges $5/ package + the taxes.

I ordered a reel from the US and they sent it UPS; it cost me more to UPS than it did to buy the reel.:flame:

Trust me; I've been ordering from the States for a lot of years.

Ron,

You can order them online (free) or pick up a bunch the next time you are at the post office. The clerks and the people in line behind you appreciate you having it prefilled out when you get there. Just package it like you would a normal package. Do not use any Priority Mail tape or packages as they are domestic use only. Also, if you ship via USPS, you can order free Priority Mail boxes and envelopes on line at usps.com. That along with printing postage online and carrier pickup, you can mail all your packages without leaving your house. Albeit this is for domestic Priority Mail only, but it is all free except shipping charges of course.

Nova they don't add charges they make you pay your countries tarriffs and taxs as required by your government.

Never I repeat Never ship FED X to canada. I have over $4000 in unpaid tarriffs and tax's that the canadian customers don't pay( Nova isn't one of them) , when they don't pay them using fed x it comes back to the seller 6 months to a year later, talk about a shocker when you see your fed x bill !!

When the canadian Customers dont pay tarriffs and taxs that is required via the canadian government the Customer doesn't give them the products ( which is the way it should be)

if you are shipping items USPS (post office) the customer still has to pay the tarriffs and tax's how ever for some reason its cheaper going by the post office.

the only problem we have with the post office in shipping to canada is that about 20% of the stuff gets lost, 50% of it takes longer than 4 weeks to get there. when we shipped plastic to canada certain provinces would hold the plastic molds and high dollar items in customs for up to 3 months

a few words of advice in shipping to canada also.

if your customer orders $100 worth of product and they ask you to declare it as a gift/sample or a lower amount, so they don't have to pay the tarriffs and taxs DON'T !!!! You will be/could be audited or asked about it at some time , this is also a federal offence from what I understand. Not to mention if its lost you can not get it replaced due to insurance on the value.

We ship to canada almost every day, we haven't had but a few problems since we dumped fed-x canada shipments and went to ups. before when we had fed-x seems like most of the customers wouldn't pay there required tax's and tarriffs.

I think what Nova was talking about is the brokerage fees. UPS is a bit higher than the post office.

I'm with you though, Delw, I ship a lot to Canada and UPS is my best friend - they get it there on time close to 100% of the time (Post offices don't seem to get along that well - BIG delays sometimes) - and you get regular updates on the shipment (and can have them sent to your customer also) if you use Quantum View Notification - free...

Also - the wording for lures, according to customs is "Artificial Fishing Lure". That what they are listed as in the HF Tarriff listing. You should also look up the Tarriff listing for your specific product - makes transit through customs much smoother.

Del; I hate to disagree with you but UPS does charge the customer handling charges; office charges and tax on the same. That is over and above the shipping which is paid to the seller at time of purchase.

I bought a reel on sale for $50 USD/ free shipping and paid for it with visa. When UPS delivered it to my door I had to pay them $53 CDN to cover their charges and the 7% tax.

I'm not knocking your business practice Del. If you are having success with them and your customers don't mind, then that's great. I'm only speaking from personal experiance.

our customers get charged 14% from ups from what they tell me. your right it includes a small ups handling fee that ups tacks on.

the deal with the post office is sometimes depending on the weight and price of the package the may or may leave it at your door free of charge, or make you come to the office and pick up up for a small fee. ( this was told to me while I was typing on this very subject from one of our canadian customers Hope I explained it correctly.

Canadian shipments april will always find the best deal for the customer and they are tricky , we just don't use fed-x anymore for canada

we have been also told by our customers that there are different rates in different area's

this is what April tells all our canadian customers.

Orders to Canada can go either USPS or UPS.

Shipping charges to Canada do not include customs charges. We insure packages for the full value, so we will not be able to claim a lesser amount on the customs value.

Customers have told us that the customs charges are lowest thru USPS. The down side to USPS is that there is no tracking available with USPS Airmail or Economy services.

USPS Airmail is 4-10 days

USPS Economy is 4- 6 weeks.

UPS Ground service offers the quickest service and best tracking. UPS will collect for Canadian Customs charges upon delivery. You may want to check with UPS before ordering to see what your charges would be.

Dicknite, Thats it broker fee's I always forget the words. now I remember that stuff, April is the one that does all the shipping and stuff. She tells me I am not allowed to talk to customers and or talk about anything except making molds as I tend to not get things correct or forget to write them down.

The women is a life saver and pretty damn smart also.

If she finds out I am posting on this thread she will probally put me on restriction or worse, take my internet access away. she has done that a few times.

Thanks Dick for the clarification,

btw how the heck have you been, hadn't seen you in a while and I need to talk to you in the next few weeks also.

Thanks guys for all the info. He bought some swivels that I use on my spinnerbaits. So would I list it as that on the form? Also, just to make sure I am on the right path. I would package them just like I would to send to someone in the US and pick up the customs form at the post office and fill it out? I do have some Global Priority Mail envelopes. I picked them up by mistake. Can I use one of them to ship in?
